Public Affairs Department



Provides activities to strengthen citizenship, reduce crime, and promote home and highway safety.  For example:

WCR - Great Decisions Lecture Series
Begins on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. at the Woman's Club on February 9, 16, 23, March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30th.

Topics to be addressed:
February 9 - Dealing with Iran, Foreign Service Officer, Curtis Jones, Chapel Hill
February 16 - Pandemics and national security, NCSA Agriculture Department, Dr. Donna Carver
February 23 - Turkey: on Europe's Verge, Dr. Roland Stephen, NCSU
March 2 - Brazil: invested pasts and hoped for futures - Wendy Wolford, UNC - Asst. Prof. Geog.
March 9 - The United Nations: post-summit outlook, Dr. Michael Struett, NCSU
March 16 - Human Rights in the age of Terrorism, Dr. Robin Kirk, Duke University
March 23 - The energy policy conundrum, Dr. Douglas Brown, UNC
March 30 - India and China: competition and cooperation, Dr. Louisa Kilgore, NCSU

  • Public Affairs Department past & present initiatives:

  • In 1954, the department began voter registration drives
  • In 1964, the department organized and coordinated the "Great Decisions - World Study Series in Wake County.'  This series continues to be sponsored every year.

  • Club member and women's advocate, Dr. Ellen Winston, was appointed by President Carter in 1979 to be Deputy Director of the White House Conference on Aging.

  • In 2001-2002, the Public Affairs Department supported the fund-raising for the Spanish translation of The Germ Patrol

The department carries out the following programs:

Chrysalis Club, Women's Correctional Center
Celebrate and observe GFWC Federation Day
Celebrate women in American History
Promote Historic Preservation
Monitor and support Government boards and commissions
Leadership and Development and Youth
Honor Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service
Involvement in legislation that affects woman and children
Promote voter participation
