Conservation Department

The Conservation Department implements programs for community beautification, air pollution and energy awareness, environmental education, recycling, resource conservation and water quality.
The Conservation Department welcomes new members and volunteers.
  • This year the Conservation Department continues its close relationship with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences as volunteers at the museum and at Prairie Ridge.
  • It provides Kind News, a monthly conservation newspaper, for each child in ten Wake County classrooms.
  • Household recycling, recycling of ink cartridges from printers, litter prevention, and volunteering for "Big Sweep" are continually emphasized in club meetings and the club newsletter.
  • Club members are also kept informed about legislation and community actions affecting the environment and quality of life.
  • Programs titled “Back to the Future—Why Transit Makes More Sense Now Than Ever” and “No Child Left Inside—the Power of Nature on Children’s Lives” will be offered at luncheon meetings in January and March 2009.
In the past its activities included:

  • Planting Crape Myrtles for an attractive northern entrance to our city in 1927
  • Sponsoring the Raleigh Garden Club in the 1950’s
  • Campaigning for the creation of the N. C. Zoological Park in 1966
  • Developing a “Bicentennial Garden” at the Women’s Correctional Center in the 1970s
  • Supporting the Rachel Carson Wildflower Garden and Sculpture at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in 2002
  • Donating to “Trees for Katrina” in the spring of 2006 to aid in hurricane recovery efforts by the National Audubon Society and the National Arbor Day Foundation to reclaim destroyed natural habitats
  • Providing the entrance to Prairie Ridge Ecostation, a research arm of the Museum of Natural Sciences off Reedy Creek Road in Raleigh
  • Distributing last year more than 600 tree seedlings to be planted by members throughout the community, exceeding the statewide goal to plant at least one tree per member in 2007-2008.
