Artist Of The MonthSusan Woodson and Susan Dahlin - February Artists of the Month
Susan Woodson Throughout my 30 year career as an artist and graphic designer, art has been a tool of expression, design, and a method of discovery. I graduated from the University of Arkansas with a BS in Art Education and continued my studies at Purdue University. I worked at Purdue as the art director of the Alumni Association before starting my own company, Full Moon Design. There I served as art director and co-producer of Helen Magazine. I also spent many years teaching graphic design and magazine design at Purdue. Susan Dahlin Art runs in the veins of this Norwegian family. At the young age of six, Susan received an easel, palette, and box of oil paints from her father Finn, a professional portrait painter. Immediately she felt the gift of artistic expression that was so deeply rooted in the Dahlin family.
Susan Woodson - cont. My husband, Chancellor at NC State, Randy Woodson, and I relocated to Raleigh in 2010. I became involved in the campaign of the Gregg Museum’s new location at the old chancellor’s residence. Recognizing a need to integrate the thriving art community of Raleigh with North Carolina State University, I and 24 other local artist created the Roundabout Art Collective, a cooperative artists’ organization, providing a place for member artists to display, promote, and sell their original works of art in a mutually beneficial setting. As a painter my work utilizes basic design components, such as line, form, color, texture, and value, emphasizing the process of creation over the finished product. I create expressionistic works that teeter between representational and nonrepresentational while always underscored by those basic elements of design. Susan Dahlin - cont. Studying Fine Art at Penn State University, it was the lure of the television screen that took her eye off the canvas. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979, she went on to fulfill a successful broadcasting career. For nearly two decades, she worked both on and off the screen hosting television programs and producing award winning documentaries at WRAL-TV 5 in Raleigh. After the passing of her father, the one possession she could not give up was his imposing seasoned easel. Several years later, she felt its calling. Dusting off the cobwebs and picking up where he left off, she feels her father’s spirit as she paints. Today, Susan enjoys exploring the beauty of nature in full color. Animals are her favorite subject matter especially cows and pigs in all shapes and colors. |
