Artist Of The Month
Dot Wilbur-Brooks - May Artist of the Month
Dot Wilbur-Brooks has been an illustrator in this area for almost 40 years. Born and raised in northern Virginia, educated in NC, and employed by the NC Botanical Garden since 1973, she is familiar with the native plants of the eastern US. As an illustrator for the Botanical Garden she uses pen and ink, graphite, colored pencil and watercolor, but her favorite medium, as you will see in the exhibit, is watercolor.
You will also notice a branching out into non-native plants, an eclectic mix of animals and some non-traditional approaches to plant images. After full- time retirement from NCBG in 2004, she has continued as a volunteer and a teacher in the Botanical Illustration Certificate Program. She also teaches at the Osher Life Long Learning Institute at Duke and enjoys gardening and a bit of painting here and there. She has been the artist for the NC Wildflower of the Year, a project of the Botanical Garden and the Garden club of NC, for the past 30 years.
